This is a question we get asked fairly regularly, usually by clients who've been using box dye at home and are considering making the switch, or by people who've had a box dye job go wrong and are trying to understand why.

The short answer is that they're meaningfully different in several ways — not just quality, but formulation, predictability, and what they do to the hair over time. Here's the longer version.

The Formulation Difference

Box dyes are formulated to work on a wide range of hair types and colours without knowing what they're working with. To achieve that, they tend to use higher concentrations of developer (the peroxide that opens the hair cuticle to allow colour to deposit) and more aggressive dye molecules than a professional colour would use for the same result on a specific hair type.

Professional colour — like the Keune Tinta range we use at Alex Royer Salon — is formulated to be mixed at the right developer strength for your specific hair, starting colour, and target result. That precision matters. A 30-volume developer on fine, previously coloured hair does something very different from what it does on thick, virgin dark hair. Box dye doesn't make that distinction.

The Predictability Problem

Box dyes show you a photo on the box that was achieved on a specific hair type, starting from a specific colour, with specific application conditions. If your hair is different from all of those things — and it almost certainly is — the result will be different too. Sometimes slightly, sometimes dramatically.

This is why box dye results can be inconsistent, and why colour correction is one of the most common reasons people come into our salon having never been before. The job of fixing a box dye that went wrong is often more complex and more expensive than the original professional colour would have been.
